With the tenth edition of the “Places of the Heart” census, the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano returns to invite all citizens to vote for the Italian places they love most and would like to see saved, protected and valued. As part of this new edition of the initiative, the committee “Votive Edicles of Bari Vecchia”, promoted by the Acli circle “Enrico Dalfino”, in collaboration with the FAI Delegation of Bari, proposes the “Votive Edicles of Bari” as the place of the heart Old”. Thus continues the commitment of the Club, the Municipality of Bari and the residents of the old city, who for years have been involved in the care of the votive aedicules, a sort of extraordinary open-air museum accessible to all.
«The newsstands votive represent an extraordinary cultural heritage of our city – comments the councilor for Culture Ines Pierucci -. I got to know and appreciate the history of some of them, including the oldest ones, during one of the first cultural walks of the mandate, organized by my friend Michele Fanelli of the Dalfino club which, with passion and spirit of self-sacrifice, promotes and has valued this important artistic path for many years. The “The places of the heart” initiative, of which we are grateful to FAI, can represent an authentic added value to continue to spread the knowledge of these small altars to which the inhabitants of Bari have entrusted their prayers for centuries “.

What they are
The votive aedicules of Bari old – also called “madonnelle” or “niches” – are about 240 small and precious altars set in the facades palaces, houses, courtyards or in the shade of stone arches and decorated with sacred images, among other things, on bas-reliefs of the sixteenth century, on frescoes of the seventeenth century. and also on oil paints on metal plates. For centuries, the newsstands have protected the doors of the houses, the alleys, the squares, the wide and the passages and are always garnished with fresh flowers and candles, testifying to the devotion of the citizens of old Bari. The most loved and revered saints are depicted in the votive aedicules: from San Nicola, patron of the city, to Santi Sabino, Rocco, Antonio da Padova, Cosma and Damiano, Vito, Domenico and finally the Madonna, in all its various iconographic aspects: Addolorata, Odegitria, del Carmelo, del Rosario, degli Angeli, etc .. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries some famous local artists, including the master Michele Montrone and his pupils Dentamaro and Lanave, dedicated themselves to the creation of these sacred images. The newsstands, by their very nature, the state of conservation and the position, exposed to atmospheric agents, are very fragile artifacts, whose beauty and maintenance are guaranteed thanks to the people of the devotees.
